Operating System

  • iVerbum runs only on Mac OS X.4 or OS X.5

Setting up Index Sets and Root Folders

  • Custom create Root Folders:
    • Don't load generic folders or mega-folders as Root Folders.
    • iVerbum has safeguards to prevent some folders like iVerbum provides some folders (e.g., the hard drive, home folder, etc.) from being Root Folders, but use common sense.
  • Set up Index Sets to contain mostly, but not necessarily exclusively your research documents
    • iVerbum reads rtf, doc, pdf, txt, and html files.
    • But it presently cannot read other important formats like Pages, InDesign, Mellel, etc.
      • But these file CAN be stored in the Index Sets anyway. iVerbum ignores them; but let the research files be predominate in your Index Sets.

Search Indexes

  • iVerbum constructs its on Search Indexes using the Glimpse search engine developed for UNIX.
  • These auxiliary files are hidden but can be created and erased by the user.
  • You have control: See FAQ / Troubleshooting for important information regarding search indexes.

Quick Start

  • Work through the Quick Start tutorial.
  • In OS X.5, iVerbum Help is presented as a type of floating window:
    • If you find that you are having trouble entering text in the Search Settings panel, its probably because the Help window is open and active.
    • Click in the Search Window in iVerbum and then go back to the Search Settings panel and enter the data.

File Names

  • File names (including their paths) must be in Western ASCII.
  • Path names are limited to about 200 characters.
  • iVerbum does provide color coding to recognized illegal names and a utility to convert the names to plain ascii.

Languages

  • iVerbum is suitable for English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and to a lesser extent Greek.
  • The Search Results Table is in Western ASCII, but the file itself loaded into the text pane (the main document pane) is unicode so it contains accents, etc., as well as the full RTF / DOC formatting information.
  • iVerbum is not suitable for non-latin fonts such as Chinese, Arabic scripts, etc.

String Search

  • The String Search feature of iVerbum has been greatly enhanced in iVerbum 3.
  • Since it currently provides an exact match (with a case-sensitivity option), it may not always show the desired hit in PDF documents since the soft returns are translated into a type of 'break' upon creating a pdf file.
    • However, all corresponding Boolean hits can be displayed without redoing the search to display the desired results.
    • Another version of String Search could be made available in the future if there is sufficient demand for it.

DOC / HTML

  • iVerbum has the same limitations that TextEdit has for rendering DOC and HTML files:
    • Most, but not all DOC features, such as footnoting, are included; and HTML formatting will not in general have the same quality as a browser.

PDF Markup

  • Although iVerbum provides numerous and efficient types of pdf markup features, the Strikeout and Underline modes currently work well only for single lines.
  • The Highlight, Strikeout, and Underline markup features work only in OS X.5.
    • However, the highlighting of search hits in PDF files works for Tiger as well as for Leopard.
  • PDF Mark currently works for pages in the Portrait, but not Landscape, Orientation.
